INNOVATIVE MOMENTS AS CHANGE MARKERS IN PSYCHOTHERAPY:
CONCEPTUAL BACKGROUND AND CODING PROCEDURES
ONLINE SUBMISSION
Innovative moments (IMs) are novel narratives related to actions, cognitions, and emotions that represent alternatives to the problems that are the target of the therapeutic work. IMs may occur within psychotherapy sessions, emerging spontaneously or prompted by the therapist’s interventions.
Gonçalves and collaborators (2011, 2023) developed the Innovative Moments Coding System (IMCS), a reliable and validated coding system capable of identifying IMs markers of change within psychotherapy sessions. The system also allows for tracking three levels of IMs, which are hierarchically organized and represent the client’s advancement from dysfunctional to more adaptive meanings. Several studies with different samples and populations have suggested that there is a relationship between the production of IMs and positive outcomes in psychotherapy.
The webinar aims to present the IMCS, its usefulness and applicability in the field of process-outcome research in psychotherapy. It is structured in two parts: the first will address the theoretical background of the IMCS; in the second, the coding procedures will be presented through some examples based on the analysis of transcripts of psychotherapy sessions.
